On the 13th May, 2011, The Justcie Campaign was launched. Around 70 people attended the event in a show of support for human rights and justice. We were honoured to welcome our special guests including our Patron, the Honourable John Dowd AO QC, Mary Kostakidis, Stuart Rees, Phil Glendenning, Rev. Graham Long and many others.
This pre-recorded film from former Guantanamo Bay guard Brandon Neely was played to the attendees.
The following are some words from Brandon’s address:
“Torture is wrong…. People in our government need to be held accountable for actions that have taken place over the last 10 years. It is up to people like you and others to stand up and demand accountability of our government and say ‘enough is enough’. And now is as good a time as ever to demand that the Australian Government and American Government do a real investigation into treatment that David and many others were subjected to. The abuses at Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib and elsewhere cannot be talked up to the actions of a few bad apples…. If this doesn’t end now, when will it ever end? Who’s next to be treated in that manner, you? me? I don’t know, but I don’t want to find out either.”
